Description
The zone of fresh earth and landslide at the foot of this hillside on Montague Island marks the southwest trending Patton Bay fault, which was reactivated during the earthquake. The northwest side of this vertical fault (on the left hand side of the photo was displaced upward as much as 8 feet with respect to the southeast side. There was, in addition, 9 feet of associated upwarping of the up-thrown (northwest) block, so that total vertical displacement across the entire fault zone was 17 feet. The view is to the northeast.
